The Writing Studio at Georgia State:
Write/Chat: Your Computer, Your Text, and Your Tutor

Working with a Tutor via E-mail

Are you working on a paper for class? Would you like to talk with someone about your ideas to get started? Would you like to get responses from a real reader on a rough draft of your personal statement or other writing project? In addition to our physical writing studio space in GCB 972, The Writing Studio now works with undergraduate and graduate student writers by e-mail. Experienced graduate students are available to teach writing in one-on-one environments, wherever you are in the writing process.

Our tutors are graduate student writers and writing instructors. We emphasize writing as an art--an art that students learn through conversation and practice within a community of writers and readers.

Tutors are teachers of writing, not proofreaders or editors. We do not correct errors, and we do not write for students. We teach students strategies for becoming their own critics and strategies to enhance communication through writing.

How to submit your writing project via e-mail:

Before sending us e-mail, be sure to register in our Studio database. Before working with you, our online tutors must verify that you are in the database, so registering first will avoid delays in getting a response.

It’s easy to send your writing project to an online tutor. You don't need to make an appointment; simply send an e-mail following the directions below.

In order to get a prompt response, please limit your submission to no more than ten pages. For a longer writing project, please contact the tutors by phone or email them to make arrangements prior to submitting your project. They can be reached by e-mailing onlinetutoring@gsu.edu or by calling 404-413-5829 or 404-413-5840 (please leave a voice mail if no one answers).

Send your writing as a word-processing attachment (preferably an .rtf or .doc file) to onlinetutoring@gsu.edu.

A Writing Studio Tutor will respond to your writing, concentrating on the areas you have identified in the submission form.

Planning ahead is essential; this is not the place for last-minute revision efforts. Please allow 24 - 48 hours to receive feedback. For papers submitted after noon on Friday, tutors will review them the following Monday.

During times of peak activity, such as during mid-terms and final exam weeks, please allow 72 hours to receive a response from an online tutor.

Send an e-mail.
